Handicap Tournament 2020

We’re happy to announce that we will be kicking off this year’s Handicap competitions beginning 6th July running for three weeks with finals planned for the weekend of 23rd/24th July.

Given we have quite a few new members joining in the last month we’re going to run things a little differently this year. This year doubles partners will be selected through an open draw.  It’ll be a great way to get to know folks across the club and it will also ensure that the tournament is open and competitive.

Matches can be either:

  1. 1 set
  2. best of 3 sets

Note: No tiebreakers- instead it will be best of three games and please make every effort to get your games played, walkovers should really be a last resort.

Both teams need to agree to option a. before commencing the match, in the absence of agreement option b. is the default. Entry is €10 for either one or two tournaments from Ladies Singles, Ladies Doubles, Gents Singles, Gents Doubles, Mixed Doubles.

Games may be played on grass or the hard courts. We will amend the booking schedule for the duration of the tournament such that bookings are in 30 minute slots.  You will be allowed to book:

– 3 consecutive slots for a handicap match, please put “(H)” on the booking.  If you plan on playing one set 2 consecutive slots should suffice.

– 2 consecutive slots from 5pm to 10pm weekdays and all day Saturday and Sunday on the hardcourts if you are not playing a handicap match

– 4 consecutive slots on weekdays up to 5pm whether handicap or not.

Olive and Marc have been doing great work in seeking to categorise new members by ability and we will use this information to assist in determining the handicaps. The handicap structure will be displayed on the noticeboard outside the courts and is currently also on the clubhouse noticeboard.

For those who haven’t played in it before it’s a really enjoyable competition which is open to all levels and abilities as the handicapping system seeks to level the playing field. You’ll see in the form there’s an entry fee of €10 which will go towards prizes and balls for finals day.

Please get your entry in by Friday 3rd July as we’ll be preparing the draw on Saturday 4th July with the plan to get games kicked off from Monday 6th July.

All-Weather Courts Upgrade

Important Club Announcement

The Committee is delighted to announce that Stratford will shortly undertake a major upgrade to our all-weather court playing surfaces.  This is a vital investment in our Club facilities and will result in a more enjoyable playing experience for all our members.
Having sought professional advice on the current condition of the court surface we are advised that a full and thorough rejuvenation of the courts is necessary.  In a nutshell, every 5-7 years our four all-weather (savannah) courts need to have c20 tonnes of sand removed and replaced with clean sand through a rejuvenation process.  While the carpet itself also requires periodic replacement, we have been advised that our carpets have 5 to 10 more years of useful life. Over the past number of months we gathered a series of comparative quotes and checked the credentials of each contractor. The selected provider to undertake the work is Court Care.
As you know, we also closed the grass courts a few weeks early this year to enable the groundsman perform additional improvement works. Descarifying, reseeding and fertilising were carried out in September and early signs are that the new grass has sprouted well, which bodes extremely positively for our grass courts in 2020.

 

It would not have been possible to carry out this work for the past several years, first and foremost because of our depleted membership numbers and financial resources, but also because of the uncertainty with regard to our tenure on the premises (an area in which we have made substantial progress in recent months).  After a huge collective effort in marketing the club for the past 2-3 years, our membership numbers have grown substantially (this year in particular) and provided that we can maintain our numbers at or above these higher levels, it affords greater financial flexibility.

 

The executive function for the running of the Club is the responsibility of the committee.  We are satisfied that Stratford has sufficient financial resources to fund this rejuvenation without taking on any debt. We are also of the view that making this investment in our facilities will be of huge benefit to our Club: improving the quality of our courts will help us to retain our existing members and attract new members in the coming years.  Of course, making this investment means that our normal Club fundraising activities become all the more important – we hope that all members will do all that they can to support these efforts over the coming years, starting with a Table Quiz to be held in Terenure Sports Club (CYM) on 14 November – details to follow soon so put it in your diaries!

 

Rejuvenation work is expected to take place in late November and will last approximately two weeks. There will be limited access to courts during the upgrade and we will notify all members of work dates as soon as we have them.  In fact, we expect that two courts at a time will be out of action for a period of two weeks. We will do our best to ensure that the impact upon social, Friday night team tennis and any FloodLit playoffs are minimised.

The committee is in the process of drafting a development plan for the club, which we will bring to the membership for their feedback and opinions shortly.

Ladies Runners Up in DLTC Seniors Competiton

Our ladies came very close to a first league victory in many years for Stratford narrowly going down in the last marathon match of the day 7-6 5-7 5-7, it couldn’t have been much closer.

However, the team did secure the club’s first pennant in 14 years!

The ladies have been amazing throughout this campaign and are an inspiration to the rest of the club. Thankyou for your commitment and enthusiasm, which all bodes well for future competitions.

Grass Court Invitational Success

Inaugural Grass Court Tournament

What a day for our inaugural grass-courts invitational last Sunday (July 7th). Terrific tennis, wonderful food and refreshments, and a great bunch of people, all in beautiful sunshine. Congrats to our first ever winners LCC Tennis and runners up Sandycove Tennis & Squash Club. Huge thanks to all seven teams who joined us to raise funds for the preservation of our historic grass courts. And to play some fantastic tennis in glorious sunshine.
